January, what are we going to do with you?
Or rather, what are we going to do with ourselves when you are you, January?
If you subscribe to the idea of Blue Monday, well, you have just survived the most depressing day of the year! You've done it, champ!
But for many of us, January is just the beginning of a long slog through what may seem like endless days of cold and gray. It doesn't have to be that way, though, dear bird. Keep tuned in. Keep paying attention. The sky is really blue, sometimes! The air isn't even all that cold, sometimes (oh, hello, climate change! What strange fluctuations you seem to bring)! And when it is cold, well, cold is for layering up and then coming in for tea...
And oh, the winter moon... what a sight, the big full moon last week, rising through bare tree branches amid a halo of cloud. And the winter stars, with Orion standing proud in the sky... such shows just don't happen in the easy warm days of summer.
If you are lucky enough to live in an area with dark skies, do yourself a favor and step out some clear night (wear at least a scarf if it's chilly). Take in the delicious, glittering darkness, the deep velvet of space and the burning, distant miracles of the myriad stars. That light has traveled incredible distances just to twinkle in your eye! Let yourself be embraced by the stillness of winter.
Taking those small moments is a huge step in making it through the season in good spirits. Instead of bemoaning how brown and boring everything is, maybe look a little closer... like at these sweet little remnants that remain after witch hazel has spent its blooms. (See what these cuties look like in flower here!)
Or spy the end of tree branches, where the leaves which will erupt in glorious greenery in just a few months are promised in these nascent buds.
Winter always holds the promise of spring. The wheel of seasons is always turning. Don't forget to stop and breathe in the moment that is now. Appreciating the world around you is a powerful tool in our toolbox for joyous living. (If you're feeling like you need some more tools, our Good Day Sunshine essential oil blend is a great mood lifter!)
However you make it through winter gloom, dear birds, joyously or grudgingly, do take the time to look around, to experience the moments of your life. Check in to this adventure we're all on.
Best wishes for your winter journey!
