Sometimes it's hard, right? Sometimes the weight and ways of the world seem like they are conspiring to keep us swimming hard just to stay afloat without actually getting anywhere. But we keep going, keep working, and struggle through. In times like this, taking a moment to reflect on all the things you DO have and things that are going your way can make such a difference.
Even if they are just little things, even if they wouldn't mean anything to someone else, take a deep breath and take stock of the bright spots in your life. Do it now, even. Get comfortable, then close your eyes and think of something that you are so thankful for, holding it in your mind. Sit with it for a couple inhales and exhales, holding the image or thought of this beloved. Take your time, I'll wait.
Notice how you feel now. Do you feel more relaxed? Happier? When I just did this practice, I felt tension release from my body and my mood lifted. I felt a warm, subtle wave of ease and grace. It really is amazing how focusing on something we are grateful for can give us the energy and motivation to power through whatever we are pursuing. It's a lifeline in a sea of turmoil.
And so, with Thanksgiving nearly upon us to open the gates on the holiday season, with all its bustling frenzy, I suggest maybe taking that little break for yourself, giving yourself an uplifting moment of thanks-giving. It's so easy to get caught up and rush mindlessly, frantically through life. This year, give yourself the gift of gratitude, and see if you notice a sweet thread of bliss buoying you up in those tough moments.
